Dr Jeremy M C Axon MBBS FRCP(UK)

I trained at Charing Cross Hospital Medical School and qualified in 1984. I was a Research Registrar in Rheumatology at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London. Most of the research I performed was in the use of cell culture for studying rheumatoid arthritis. I then trained as a Senior Registrar in Rheumatology and Rehabilitation in the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre at Oxford. Here I was able to see a full range of rheumatological problems, and in particular, we had a very active sports injury clinic that catered for all the students and postgraduates and everybody else in Oxford that played sport. Being closely associated with the orthopaedic team, we had regular combined clinics in all aspects of rheumatology/orthopaedics.

In 1994 I was appointed to my NHS post at Queen Elizabeth II Hospital, Welwyn Garden City. My post included running the Rheumatology service for both the QEII and Hertford County Hospitals. I also have responsibility for the rehabilitation unit called Danesbury Home in Old Welwyn.

My main interest in rheumatology started whilst at school. I played a great deal of cricket, rugby and football and had a natural interest not only in biology but also in anatomy. My father was a Medical Director to the British Olympic Association for a number of years covering several Olympics, and again that was a great stimulus for my interest in soft tissue injuries in particular.

From a personal point of view I have an interest in neck and back problems. Obviously most of the clinics are covering patients with rheumatoid arthritis. I have a particular combined clinic with another specialist in both osteoporosis and also Paediatric Rheumatology.

In 2005 we were shortlisted for a prestigious hospital doctor award. Over the last few years my practise at Welwyn has joined up with the Rheumatology Department at the Lister Hospital, Stevenage. Our work on patient centred care, particularly with a helpline and also patient education days was recognised.

My particular contribution was to help set up a triage service so that we now have highly qualified Physiotherapists who are able to assess patients with neck and back problems as well as perform Cortisone injections if need be. I am a great believer in utilising the skills of Physiotherapists, Rheumatology Nurses and Occupational Therapists to their fullest.

On a personal note I continue to play golf, cricket and tennis. I keep very much up to date with all other sports. I also have 3 children who are very active in rugby, cricket, hockey and tennis and spend most of the weekends supporting their activities.
